Strengthening the university’s competencies in joint research management through the Institute for Open Innovation

Taking advantage of its proud tradition in practical education, Osaka University has been promoting collaboration with industry in both basic and applied research in a well-balanced manner under its motto, “Live Locally, Grow Globally.” With the slogan “Industry on Campus,” the university has been establishing joint research chairs and research alliance laboratories since 2006 as a foundation for developing new industries in cooperation with companies. Against this backdrop, the Osaka University Institute for Open Innovation (“IOI”) was opened on October 1, 2019, as a project management organization that makes plans and proposals for large-scale joint research and promotes commercialization of such research, while helping partner companies develop core competencies (innovative businesses).

With centralized administration undertaken by project management experts, IOI has been implementing projects to create innovations that can be launched in international markets, while offering attractive joint research proposals to companies. By combining several academic disciplines and technical seeds available in the university, the project management experts are also responsible for managing collaborative activities with companies, including developing joint research plans that are attractive to companies, managing the progress of joint research according to the research plans, ensuring smooth communications and negotiations with partner companies, and taking charge of legal affairs, contracts and risk management, thus allowing researchers to concentrate on IOI-related R&D projects.

Initially, IOI is engaging in R&D projects in the fields of medical equipment, behavior sensing, drug discovery, materials (polymers and medical materials), and environment/energy, and will expand the scope of its research university-wide.

Osaka University has been selected for the Project for Establishing Institutes for Open Innovation for the 2019–2020 academic year by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. IOI looks forward to contributing to the promotion of open innovation in Japan.

Management Structure of Institute for Open Innovation

Features

Amid drastic changes in the competitive environment surrounding industries, companies are struggling to find effective ways to access more innovative science and technology. One of the most promising solutions for these companies is open innovation with academia, including universities. We believe that promoting open innovation requires, among other things, creating an environment that allows researchers of both companies and Osaka University to concentrate on their research activities, setting forth contractual and other terms and conditions, and strategically acquiring intellectual properties. We believe we can help to produce higher-quality research results faster by consistently and promptly providing professional support across the entire joint research process, from startup to the final stage of applying research results in practice.

In order to further promote university-society co-creation efforts, we will focus also on: technologies necessary for the super smart society service platform (e.g. cyber security, IoT system construction, big data analysis, devices); large-scale joint research on core technologies for the creation of new values (e.g. robotics, sensors, biotechnology, materials and nano-technology, optics and quantum technology); and the incubation of startups.

Through the activities of IOI, we are determined to strengthen our partnerships with companies in Japan, the U.S. and the rest of the world, thereby promoting open innovation from Osaka University.
